In the Wardrobe

“Hey Jonny, did you see monsters last night?” said his elder brother Donovan, with an impish smile. Jonny was seven years old. Every night, his father would tuck him in, check for monsters in his room, and switch off the light. Donovan always teased him about it. After dinner, Donovan laughed and said, “Jonny, be careful. I heard that a monster is prowling tonight.” “Don’t talk nonsense, Don,” scolded their father. Jonny made a face and ran upstairs. That night as his father tucked him in, Jonny said, “I know there are no monsters!” Yet, Jonny could not sleep. It was past midnight. Suddenly, he heard scratching sounds from the wardrobe. “Go away. I know it’s you, Don!” said Jonny. The scratching continued. Furious, Jonny got up. He flung the wardrobe door wide open. “Stop it…Don…” he stopped in mid-sentence. There was no one inside in the wardrobe. He ran to his brother’s room. Donovan was fast asleep.
