Hobbies (Academic)

Hobbies are interesting pursuits which we engage in for recreating, diversion or amusement. They are meant mainly to occupy our leisure hours. We get fed up with the daily routine and humdrum of life and yearn for something unusual. We seek for something that can make us feel relieved from the monotony of our daily round of duties. We want to have some occupation which can help us escape from boredom of our regular world and bring us refreshment of mind and body. We, therefore, cultivate hobbies.
There are many hobbies. Stamps or coins collecting, travelling, singing, dancing, reading, playing indoor or outdoor games etc. etc. are a few of the hobbies common with elite peole. Common people can afford to be engaged in only inexpensive hobbies like kite flying, singing, painting, dancing, playing cards or chess, etc. etc. Hobbies like coin colletcing, photography, swimming, travelling are very expensive. Only rich people can afford to engage themselves in them.
Hobbies are not without their uses. A hobby is a must for the proper enjoyment of life. It is an excellent way of utilising one’s spare time. An idle brain is devil’s work-shop,’ is a very common saying. Sitting idle makes us think about many things which are of no concern to us. We entertain some mischievous or evil thoughts. So, by engaging ourselves in some useful hobbies we fill up our leisure hours and hence keep ourselves at an arm’s length from evil thoughts and evil deeds.
Hobbies like coin collecting, stamp collecting, reading etc. are entertaning as well as instructive. Those who have stamp collecting and coin collecting as their hobbies will be able to have historical knowledge of most of the countries of the world. Coins and stamps reveal to us various facts and figures of different nations. Reading is a very good hobby. It make us understand life better. After the dull and dreary day’s work we find comfort and solace we share both our joys and sorrows. They comfort us in our distress and uphold us in despair. They make us forget cares and worries and transport us to livelier surroundings.
Hobbies give us aesthetic pleasure. Tending of delicate plants and nursing of flowers is a source of utmost delight. When the flowers bloom in all their freshness and glory none but a dead soul can remain unexcited.
Some of the hobbies bring in handsome income also. Painting done in spare time may brings in handsome income. Singing and dancing are a few other hobbies by indulging in which one can make money also.
People, sometimes, get so much interested in their hobbies that they absolutely do not care for their regular work. This is bad and must be guarded against.
Hobby is an education in itself. It is the best source of recreation, diversion and amusement. It is a mental tonic and provides us with thrill and adventure. It knocks dullness out of life and makes life beautiful and interesting.
