Hellen Keller (Historical Personalities)

Hellen Keller was an exceptionally talented dynamic and brilliant woman. She rose up to great heights inspite of her inability to see, hear and talk. She was blind, deaf and dumb from her childhood, yet she achieved greatness with her willpower, determination and hardwork.
Hellen Keller was born on 27 June 1880 in U.S.A. She was merely 18 months old, when a deadly disease struck her and made her blind for life. She not only became blind, but also lost the power to hear or talk. Inspite of being a handicap, she was a person of tremendous guts and willpower.
She didn’t lose the will to live. She would scrutinize the things with her hands and find out its shape. She would tell her mother to give her things through finger gestures. If her mother provided her the things desired by her, she would get very pleased but in case she was unable to understand her gestures, she would become very furious. Hellen Keller became very obstinate and aggressive with time. Her parents showed her to many doctors but nobody was able to treat her. Finally she was taken to a teacher called Miss Salibaan.
Miss Salibaan was a very disciplined teacher. She inculcated the spirit of discipline in Hellen Keller from the very beginning. She taught her to be obedient and respectful towards elders. She also made her understand English language through play and learn method.
Slowly and gradually, she began to combine alphabet to form words. One day, Miss Salibaan kept her hand under a tap and wrote water on it. Now Hellen Keller realised that everything has a name. Now, she would learn names of the things and would tell her wish by writing.
Miss Salibaan enjoyed teaching Hellen, as she used to grasp things quickly and more than that, she loved Miss Salibaan from the core of her heart. Miss Salibaan would take Hellen in the midst of fields and would teach her about the kinds of plants and their significance in human life.
Hellen Keller was able to write and read fully at the age of eight. It is said that the dumb can never talk, but Hellen Keller was an exceptional case. She began to talk in her very childhood with the help of her teacher, Miss Fuller. Miss Salibaan took her to Miss Fuller so that she could learn how to talk. Miss Fuller was very proficient in teaching dumb children. She brought Hellen close to her and kept her hands on her mouth. Then she uttered various words. Hellen began to imitate her and within an hour she learned six alphabet. Miss Fuller taught her 11 lessons, and told her to practice speaking till she attains fluency in English language.
Hellen Keller began to practice day and night to attain command over English language. Within 6 years, she gained full control over English language and was able to speak eloquently on the stage with full confidence. At the age of 17 she became fluent in French, German, Greek, Roman, Latin and English languages. In 1904, she passed her graduation.
She was also good in extra co-curricular activities. She knew how to make boats and enjoyed boating with her friends. She knew swimming. Hellen Keller travelled around the world for six times.
At the age of 74 she completed her last journey. She accumulated crores of rupees for the welfare of blind, deaf and dumb people. She served handicapped people of the world selflessly.
This brilliant woman expired at the ripe age of 86 on 17 June 1968, due to heart attack.
Millions of people come and go, but only one person out of many millions can ever become Hellen Keller, the great.
