Hanuman was the son of Anjana and Kesari, the monkey king. They both were the devotees of Lord Shiva. When Dasharatha was holding the Putrakameshthi yajna, Shiva sent the wind-god, Vayu, to snatch a part of the prasada and give it to Anjana. Hanuman was born to Anjana and is considered an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He would be the dearest companion and devotee of Sri Rama. As an infant, Hanuman was naughty. One day, he took off to eat the sun, thinking it was a fruit. Frightened Surya asked for Indra’s help and Indra hit the infant with his weapon, the Vajra. Vayu was furious and stopped all the normal functions of air and wind. All creatures began to choke. Brahma was very angry with Indra. All the gods apologised to Vayu who resumed his functions after little Hanuman was revived. All the gods blessed Hanuman. He would be invincible against all weapons.
