Grandpa’s Sound Advice

Rohan was a very naughty boy. All his neighbours were troubled by his pranks.

Rohan’s parents would try to make him mend his ways. But their advice fell flat on Rohan.

One day, during summer vacations, Rohan’s parents sent him to his grandpa who lived
in a village.

Having reached the village, Rohan resumed his naughty acts. The people of the village would come over to Rohan’s grandpa to complain against him.

The upset grandpa hit upon a plan to mend Rohan’s ways.

The grandpa took Rohan to his garden and asked him to uproot a small plant. Rohan at once uprooted the small plant.

Thereafter, the grandpa asked him to uproot another plant which was a little bigger. Rohan uprooted it too, using all his might.

Now, the grandpa asked Rohan to uproot a big and strong plant. Rohan tried very hard but the plant didn’t budge an inch.

Disappointed Rohan uttered, “O grandpa, uprooting this plant is quite difficult.” The grandpa told, “Dear, the
same is with our habits.”

The grandpa continued, “It is easy to make a habit. But when it gets rooted, it becomes next to impossible to control it.”

Rohan understood the hidden meaning of the grandpa’s words. He decided to give up his bad habits.

Moral : It is always beneficial to give up bad habits.

Justice of the River

Long, long ago, there lived a milkman in a village.

He would sell milk in the nearby town and make both ends meet.

The milkman had to cross a river by boat to go over to the town.

One day, the milkman thought, ‘Why not add some river-water to the milk?…

…The quantity of the milk would get increased and I would earn more money.’

From that day on, the milkman would daily add river-water to the milk.

By selling water-added milk the milkman amassed a lot of wealth in a few years.

One day, he went over to the town and bought a lot of jewellery for his wife with the money.

On his way back, the milkman’s boat began to sink in the river. Somehow, he swam to the safety.

After reaching the bank he learnt that all his jewellery was drowned in the river. He felt disappointed and began to weep.

Suddenly, a voice from the river boomed, “O idiot, why do you weep? I have taken back the money which you earned by mixing my river-water. Your money is with you.”

The milkman realised his mistake. He decided to earn money through honesty.

Moral : The money earned through dishonesty is the real cause of grief.
