In Hindu society people used to worship various gods and goddesses. Some worshipped Shankar, others Hanuman. Some worshipped Durga, others Kali. Even today, the same situations prevailing in the Hindu society. Hindus don’t believe in one God only that is why there are as many gods and goddesses worshipped as there are various sections in the Hindu society. Rammohan wanted to tell the Hindu society that God is only one. Then why worship various gods and goddesses?
Rammohan considered this as superstition. He wanted to get rid of this superstition from the grassroot level. So, he decided to lit the flame of knowledge inside the people, so that they could see the truth hidden in that flame.
English was considered as modern language those days. So, Rammohan studied the English language. He regularly studied the English newspaper. This way he got well versed in English language. He could speak English very well as a Britisher. Even the Britishers were astonished by his fluency in speaking English. By reading the newspapers, he would know very well what was happening in the outside world. He felt that the Indians were not progressing as the Britishers. Indians were not able to know what was happening in the foreign countries because of illiteracy.
Foolish ill fated customs of the society
Rammohan had a keen desire to inscribe new and developed thoughts inside the people’s minds. He had accepted this fact that the people of India were approaching towards the ditch of superstition because of the lack of rationality. People of our society think that our sins will get washed away by bathing in the holy rivers or worshipping the peepal tree or by giving alms to the saints. Those who think like this are committing a grave mistake. They can’t attain salvation by bathing in the holy rivers. They are wondering in the darkness of superstition. They have forgotten about likes-dislikes because of superstition. God considers every one equal, because he is unique. Where as a person is filled with the discriminations be it racial or of untouchability. Every individual has the ability of thinking and taking various decisions, then why do they accept any fact foolishly. If they desire, they may accept the truths prevailing in the religious customs. If a human being doesn’t go by the ways of others and follows his own path of truth and wisdom, then no one in the world has the courage to stop him in the path of his upliftment. A person can progress only by eliminating all the discriminations.
There are many rituals and customs prevailing in the society today. Those who believe in those rituals and customs only give way to ill fated customs. They do not gain anything by this. Then why do they accepted these types of customs? The reason behind this is that they are forced to accept those customs and they follow those blindly.
Today the most foolish ill fated custom prevailing in the society is that when a person is not able to perform or do something better, then he considers it as God’s grace and tries to hide his weaknesses. This is very disgusting that a person does not fight for his problems. By watching others, he goes on entering into the ditch of superstition. If he thinks rationally, then he can transform the structure of the society completely.
Rammohan considered the transferring of those rituals and customs to the forthcoming generation as wrong which had no scientific base at all. There were some such rituals and customs which contributed only to misleading people instead of giving them proper guidance.
Rammohan firmly opposed these types of customs and rituals and also engaged other people fight against them. People used to talk about religion but their views had no firm base at all.
The views people presented were always opposed by others. They themselves did not believe in their views too as they would bring changes in their views every now and then.
Followers of single religion were always engaged pulling each other’s legs. If a person joined their religion, then he had to go according to their rituals, and customs. Rammohan was very much against this. Those who kept themselves away form hypocrisies, only could understand the modern views of Rammohan. Today’s modern India is standing firmly because of his modern views.
