Francis was a friendly and helpful young man. Most people in the village made him run errands and do things for them. He fetched things from the market, mowed lawns, cut hedges, picked up children from school and did a hundred little tasks. But none ever said ‘Thank you’ to him! One day, a young lady named Eliza came to stay with her aunt, Miss Goodwell, and saw the way Francis helped everyone. She liked him very much and asked him, “Will you please come with me when I return to my home?” Francis agreed, for he loved Eliza. But when Francis reached home, he stopped in wonder, for it was a palace and the young lady was Princess Elizabeth! ‘What work can I do here?’ he thought, ‘They have enough servants and soldiers!’ Princess Elizabeth said to the king, “This is the man I want as my husband!” Princess Elizabeth and Francis were married and lived happily.
Friendly Francis
