T.V. Journalism : A Bright Future
Present time is a time of changes in the electronic media. There is a continuous marathon race of channels going on the roads, where electronic ripples are spreading in the infinite sky. Today in India approximately 50 channels are going on air. Till the year 2010, there are possibilities that there would be a revolutionary addition in their numbers. Electronic media has such a massive impact on us that we have started doing our daily chores and set our daily routine according to the programmes being telecasted on the major channels.
Once there was a time when only entertainment programmes were telecast on channels. For news, people use to wait for News Bulletin on Doordarshan, but today the scene has changed. Today all the major broadcasters has a dedicated channel for news. This is not all, many new News Channel are also in air. After Star and Zee, now Doordarshan has also launched different news channel, which are going very popular.
On Zee T.V. and other channels, there is already an overflow of news. C.N.N presented the active reporting of Gulf War for the viewers, which was a revolutionary starting, and is now progressing step by step. Be it Monika Levinsky episode, kidnapping of Indian Airlines plane, Bill Clinton’s visit to India or live coverage of elections, in every front. T.V. journalism has maintained their standards and proves to be trustworthy. In the world of channels, scope of news has led to opportunities for a career. Programmes based on news and analysis are the first choice of viewers, all over the world. There are great hidden opportunities for making a career, earning wealth and fame in T.V journalism. Specialists associated with the electronic media are of the view that there is a 70% non-verbal communication in the T.V journalism and rest 30% is the importance of words. Due to shortage of time during an interview, asking structured questions has more importance.

Today many universities in the country are providing Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Public Relations, where “Electronic Media” is one of the subject. This is not all, there are many institutions in the country which are executing training courses in T.V. Journalism.

Masters of this field are only a few. Training does miracle and is helpful in improving and shaping the process of understanding the direction, production, etc.,The technology play a big role in T.V journalism. Therefore, training develops knowledge, ability to judge, and efficiency. Indian Public Relation Institute, situated in Jawaharlal Nehru University Campus, New Delhi, Public Relation, Institute of Jamia Milia Islamia, Indian Film and T.V Training Institution, Pune and other Institution located in South India offers training courses in T.V Journalism, direction, production etc. The starting salary of a trained T.V. journalist after appointment is between Rs. 5000/- 8000/- per month which increases with experience. In the above Institutions, graduation is the required academic qualification. Many Institutions even select students who have passed 10+2 and intermediate.
Asian Academy of Films and T.V. Film City Centre, Sector 16A, Noida (U.P) Phone – 2515254, 55, 56) also conducts a three months course in T.V. journalism. The Academy also offers training in production and direction. During training extra Rs. 8000/- is to be given as production fees. The training is given 5 days a week, and there is an arrangement of hostel for students. The Director of this institution is Mr Sandeep Marwah, who is Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor and Sridevi’s brother-in-law. Mr Marwah claims that his institution successfully conducts courses of three months, six months and one and a half years (degree courses) and more than 1500 young men – women have taken training from this institution out of which 90% have got settled somewhere or the other.
Drama Line Link, G.L. House, Near ‘Indian Oil Bhavan’, Yusuf Sarai New Delhi – 110049 (Ph: 26524342, 26524748) also offers a three month diploma course in T.V. journalism. In a batch there is an arrangement for admission of 20 students. Entry fee, Rs. 3000/- fee, and Rs. 8000/- is taken as monthly training fee. In this course the training is given in news reporting, news direction and script writing. Here also their is an arrangement of hostel for students.
