Dr. Rammanohar Lohia (Historical Personalities)

Dr. Rammanohar Lohia was one of the greatest patriots of India. He was far away from false pretensions and hypocrisy. He believed in simple living and high thinking. He was born on 23 March 1910. His father’s name was Hiralal and mother was called Chandra. Chandra was a benevolent woman, but destiny was not very kind towards her. She died when her son was just three years old.
Hiralal never remarried, as he was concerned about his son’s future. Rammanohar’s grandma gave him abundant love and took the place of the mother. At the age of 5, he was sent to a local school. He completed his fourth class from the local school and thereafter got admitted in Vishvesarnath High School.
Manohar left his school at a very young age and joined revolutionary movements to gain freedom from the Britishers.
For one whole year he didn’t go to school but later on he continued his studies, to somehow gain worldly knowledge from books. In 1925, he finished his high school, and gained first position in the class. He was very proficient in English language. His English speech would make the audience overwhelmed with love for the great leader, as he would use very alluring words to instill the spirit of patriotism in them.
Somehow he passed his graduation and thereafter was sent to Berlin by an organisation on scholarship basis. He completed his doctorate from Germany and thereafter proceeded towards India.
He came to Madras and went into a publication house. He wrote an article and received thirty rupees for it. Thereafter he bought a ticket from that money and proceeded towards Calcutta. There he had to wait for eight hours to meet his father, as his father Hiralal was an active freedom fighter.
Rammanohar was an excellent public motivator. He was once invited to give speech in university through a friend. The audience was greatly impressed by his speech. The hall echoed with the sound of claps. Rammanohar joined Mahatma Gandhi’s freedom movements. Mahatma Gandhi was very impressed by him. Rammanohar possessed a magnetic personality.
In the year 1940, he gave a speech in Allahabad, when the police came to arrest him with the excuse that his speech was inciting the public. He was put behind the bars for two years.
Mahatma Gandhi was disturbed by his imprisonment. He too wrote letter interrogating this innocent man’s arrest.
After coming from jail, Rammanohar Lohia wrote many articles against the Britishers, but now Britishers were becoming weak in front of our strong protests and thus, they were not able to take any strong steps against them.
Rammanohar formed Socialist Party and travelled in many countries of the world to popularise his party. He had liberal views and a magnanimous heart. He embraced everyone irrespective of caste, colour and creed.
The life of this great leader was very short. He got sick with deadly cancer and died on 12 October 1968. He was only of fifty eight years when he died after battling with life and death for a long time.
He was a brave person indeed. He fought valiantly through peaceful means to attain freedom. He shall be remembered forever for his words and deeds.
