After 1924 Belgam Congress Session every Congressman felt that Sarojini could no more be denied the presidentship of the Congress. The next session held in Kanpur was presided over by Sarojini Naidu as wished by all. Gandhi proposed her name. The representatives of S. African Congress presented her a picture of her own.
Sarojini said—‘Friends! I gratefully thank you for handing this high chair and great responsibility in my inexperienced hands. It is a great honour for me. Even if I sift through all the human dictionaries I won’t find the correct words to express my gratitude…’
As the Congress president Sarojini gave prime value to the task of giving the Indian woman her rightful place in the society and the politics. She thought that any effort without including woman would be nothing more than a half effort.
Her one year was not spent on opposing the government. Sarojini did everything she could to strengthen the organisational power of the party.
As the demand for freedom was being made on ever more strident voice British played a dirty trick.
To malign India a writer called Catherine Mayo wrote a book titled ‘Mother India’ in which India was presented in a very poor light. The book depicted Indians as mobs of barbarians steeped in blind faiths and social evils of horrendous kind. It greatly damaged India’s image abroad as the book was keenly read all over the globe.
At the instance of Gandhiji Sarojini Naidu went to America and Canada to clear the wrong impressions created by the book. She met scholars, thinkers, academicians, writers, newspaper people and leading persons to give her message. Her speeches, articles and discussions made a very favourable impression. Infact her tour proved a smashing success.
In 1929, Sarojini returned home, a tired person.
