Congress party came into existence in 1885. It was the beginning of the organised political movement in post 1857 India. All those who were politically conscious flocked to the party. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was no exception. The party was formed by an Englishman named Sir A.O. Hume. In the beginning Congress party was supposed to be a stage on which the Indians could raise their voice and address the complaints to the British government. The real aim was to provide the native politicians a permanent forum where they could let off their pent up feelings to prevent the anti-government sentiments build up. Ostensibly it was a bridge between the people and the government.
Whatever the initial aims, Bal Gangadhar Tilak realised that the party had all the potential to become a meaningful vehicle or the freedom struggle of India. From the very childhood Tilak was dead-set against the foreign rule. There was no chance of his agreeing to become a political stooge of the British. But Congress party was just right thing to give training to politicians and cadres. Indians were merely novices in the matters of politics. They badly needed a school which could teach them to become a viable political force. The congress party was the best thing to happen to the long suffering natives of India. And it was also a fact that a political party could force social reforms in a more effective way.
