Congress sessions
In 1928, in Calcutta Congress Session Gandhi proposed that if the British failed to grant independence to India within one year, the party should launch countrywide agitation for full freedom.
The next session held at Lahore was presided over by Jawahar Lal Nehru. Full freedom to India was the declaration in this session.
On 26th January, 1930 flag of the freedom was ceremonially hoisted in the session. On the occasion Mahatma Gandhi said, “The time has come when we must stand together and fight forgetting all our differences. We don’t want freedom for any one person or religion but for the entire country.”
Meanwhile, Englishmen succeeded in winning over some Muslim leaders to their side. Mohammad Ali Jinnah was one of them.
Dandi march
On 12th March, 1930 Mahatma Gandhi started his historic ‘Dandi March’ to break the Salt Act imposed on Indians by the British government. The Act made it illegal for any individual to make salt from sea water.
Gandhi and his followers marched for 24 days covering 200 miles. Before leaving Sabarmati Ashram Gandhi declared that he won’t return to the ashram without gaining independence for India.
The Dandi March again revived the spirits of the countrymen and the struggle for the independence again intensified. The entire country got swept by Dandi spirit. At Dandi Mahatma Gandhi broke the law by making salt.
On 4th May, 1930 Gandhi was arrested.
