Within a year of his becoming dictator Hitler took away all civil rights of the people, press, radio and educational institutions. Secret police named Gestapo was set up that spread its dreadful net throughout the country. The very name ‘Gestapo’ made the people shiver. Anyone criticizing Hitler was shot dead or tortured to death.
In 1933 Anti-Jew law was passed. The Jews were removed from all posts. Thousands of Jews fled to other countries. The remaining ones were sent to concentration camps. When clerics protested several Catholic padres were arrested and Catholics faced Nazi torments. Hitler declared that all the Churches, Catholic or Protestant were state property.
To strengthen the economy state control policy was adopted. Separate syndicates for workers and industrialists were formed. All the decisions about working conditions and production were in Nazi hands. In 1936, ‘Four Year Plan’ was announced to make Germany self sufficient in all fields, to banish unemployment and to militarise the nation.
The education was in government control and its aim was set at training the youth into political soldiers. Hitler made Goebbels publicity and public relation minister. Goebbels was expert propagandist. He used to say that a lie spoken hundred times becomes the truth.
