The ancestors of Babu Rajendra Prasad were the prototype residents of Amodha (Uttar Pradesh). It was a Kayastha family. Some Kayastha families had settled in Balia leaving Amodha. Even some of the families then immigrated to a village in Saran district, Bihar. Very few people were literate in these families. The family of Rajendra Prasad was one among them. Hathua was a small estate near Ziradei. Because grandfather of Rajendra Babu was literate one so he obtained the post of minister in Hathua estate. He served that estate for about 30 years. He purchased some land too. Rajendra’s father Mahadev Sahai looked after this estate. Uncle of Rajendra Prasad Jagdev Sahai also supervised the estate job staying in the house. Jagdev Sahai was childless.
Rajendra Prasad was born on Dec. 3, 1884. He was the youngest among his five brothers and sisters, ergo he was loved by entire family.
Because his uncle was childless, so he treated Rajendra Prasad as his own son. He was brought up under the tender care of his father, uncle and grandfather. Grandmother and mother too loved him much.

He used to sleep early any get up early in his childhood. When he got up he also awake his mother and not let her sleep again. Mother recited him morning prayers, stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata, prayers and songs in praise of God.
Education
His study started at the age of five. A learned Maulvi used to teach him. Rajendra used to reach school early in the morning. He was an intelligent student. He was topper in his class. Due to his intellect he surmounted two classes in a year several times.
He took equal interest in sports. He was a good player of Kho-Kho and Kabaddi. He was also fond of playing football.
He got admission in Chapra school in 1893. His elder brother too was residing and studying there. He lived there in a rented room alongwith a cook and a servant. Rajendra also started living with him for further study. He was admitted in 8th class. He took university entrance test in 1902 and topped it.
