Last Thursday we went on a class trip to a farm.It was marvelous to leave the grey buildings of the city behind and see animals grazing in the lovely green fields. Seeing animals in a field is a real novelty to many city children. The only animals we usually see are pets such as cats and dogs.
When we arrived at the farm we were welcomed by the farmer’s wife, who took us all in to the huge farm kitchen and gave us some delicious scones which she had just baked. The honey which we had with the scones had been taken from their own beehives.
We watched the farmer’s wife feeding the hens in the farmyard by throwing handfuls of grain at them. They rushed to get the food, clucking loudly. We were allowed to go in to the hen house and collect some newly-laid eggs. Usually we see them in cartons in the supermarket.
We went to watch the farmer feeding the pigs. In one of the pigsties there was a huge sow and some tiny little pink piglets. The farmer said that he had to be careful that the sow did not roll on top of the piglets because she might crush them to death. We did not want to stay long near the pigsties because of the nasty smell!
The farmer went up the hill behind the farm to take some of his sheep to a field nearer the farm. They were going to be sheared the next day. We watched his two sheepdogs round up the sheep. They were very clever and soon had the sheep down in the field.
All too soon it was time to go home again. We all had a really marvelous day at the farm. I wish I lived on a farm!
