Acropolis

Acropolis

The Acropolis is an ancient citadel that sits high above Athens and comprises many historically beautiful pieces of architecture. The Acropolis is located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens, Greece. The most important buildings within the Acropolis were constructed in the 5th century BC.

Why it is special: The word ‘Acropolis’ comes from 2 Greek words, meaning ‘highest point’ and ‘city’. The Acropolis contains some of the most architecturally important buildings of ancient Greek construction, including the iconic Parthenon, which is surrounded by other constructions such as the Propylaia, Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. Unfortunately, many of the buildings were damaged during the Morean War.
