Lhamo Dondrub was born to a Tibetan farming family. His parents were small farmers who grew barley, buckwheat and potatoes. Lhamo was just two when a search party had been sent out by the Tibetan government to find the new incarnation of the Dalai Lama. A number of signs led them to Lhamo’s home. When they saw the branches of juniper wood on the roof of Lhamo’s house, they were certain that the new Dalai Lama lived there. They had brought a number of possessions that had belonged to the Thirteenth Dalai Lama, together with the items that did not belong to him. Lhamo correctly identified those belongings to the Thirteenth Dalai Lama saying, “It’s mine!” Then, Lhamo was taken to an ancient Buddhist monastery in Tibet where he was groomed to be the Dalai Lama, the political and spiritual leader of Tibet. Since then, he has struggled to free the Tibetans from the brutal occupation by the Chinese.
