I witnessed one road accident occurred in front of me few days ago. On the completion of our happy tour to Delhi, we returned to Jammu. Our driver was an old and experienced man. He never put his feet on accelerator to raise the speed of the back bus beyond the speed limit on a route. It was hillside with so many hairpin curves on the road. At some places, we could not see, whether any vehicle was coming from the other side. It was 4 p.m. By the time itself, the visible light was getting dimmed. With the headlights of the bus on, we were proceeding our journey. Suddenly, a crowded bus overtook our bus speedily even without giving requisite horn. Since our driver was an experienced hand he could manage the sudden impromptu action of the driver, who crossed us swiftly. A whack sound pierced in our ears; the bus skipped off the road and fell into a deep gorge at Nandni.
We stopped our bus and rushed for help. Since it was a hilly route, no helping hand was near by. But luckily one of our passengers had a cellphone with him. He immediately conveyed the message to the nearby police station and fire station. Within
10-15 minutes more than 6-7 rescue vans arrived at the spot. Our driver narrated briefly about the accident to the police. All the injured passengers were admitted in Jammu Medical College, where the condition of several was stated to be critical.
The bus was totally submerged in the gorge, making it difficult for passengers to come out. Most of the people died on the spot. With the recovery of more bodies, the death toll in the bus accident raised to 53.
This was an example for one of the accidents occurring in daily life. The main cause for such accident is spirit of overtaking supplemented by negligence of traffic rules and delinquency of duties. Therefore, one should restrain himself for doing so & abide the traffic rules as they are formulated for our safety.
