Last Friday was the evening of my school party. It was a very enjoyable party and I was rather annoyed when dad came to collect me a few minutes the party was due to end. He said that we had to leave right away because the weather was so stormy.
When I got outside I saw that it was raining very hard and that there was a gale blowing. We live on a farm and we had quite long dry along a narrow country road ahead of us. It was raining so hard that the wind screen wipers were not working very well and so visibility was poor. The fact that it was very dark night made driving conditions even more difficult.
The wind seemed to be getting even stronger. That had taken mum’s small car to collect me and it was being buffeted about by the wind. He said that he wished he had taken the land rover which is a much more robust vehicle. When we came to a section of the road with a lot of large trees dad said that he would not be so surprised if one of them was blown down in the strong winds. Suddenly, we heard a deafening thud. We looked around to see that a large tree was lying across the part of the road where we had just being.
Dad stopped the car and we both got out. We were both shaking. We saw that we had a very narrow escape. A large oak tree had been blown down by the storm. It could certainly have killed us if it had landed on the car.
I gave dad a big hug. I was so glad that we had left the school party early!
