A long time ago, there lived a very rich man. He had a big house and many servants. He also had a loving family but still, he was unhappy. He always shouted at everyone for no reason. ‘I have everything but nothing makes me happy. Is there anything in this world that can make me happy?’ he always questioned himself. One day, he shouted angrily at his servants, “Why am I not happy? What should I do to be happy?” One of his servants said, “Oh, my lord! Look at the sky, the bright moon and the twinkling stars! Look at them and they will make you very happy.” “Oh no! I can see them only at night, so what will I do during daytime?”
Then, another servant said, “Sir! You should listen to music because music makes everyone happy.” The man’s face became red with anger. “Oh no!” he cried, “What a silly idea! I can’t listen to music from morning till night, day after day. This is the worst idea.” The servants went away and the man sat in his room. After some time, a servant walked into the room and said, “My lord, I think I can tell you something that will make you very happy.” “What is it?” asked the rich man. “You must find a happy man, take off his shirt and put it on. Then, his happiness will come into you and you will be as happy as he!” The man liked his idea very much. “What a nice idea! I will reward you if it works,” said the rich man.
Next day, the man sent all his servants to find a happy man. It was a very difficult task for them. They didn’t know how to check the happiness inside a person but they could not deny their master’s order either. They walked for four days in search of a happy man. On the fifth day, one of the servants saw a poor man in the village saying, “I am the happiest man in the world.” He kept saying those words. All the servants were happy to find a happy man. They brought him to the rich man’s house.
The rich man was very happy and ordered his servants to bring the poor man into his room. The poor happy man with a little smile came up to the rich man. The rich man looked at him and saw that the happiest man in the world had no shirt on. The rich man realised that to be happy, being rich and having a big house is not important. To be happy, a person should be happy at heart.
