Alexandre Goldefroy invented the blow dryer in the year 1890. His invention was an inspiration from the principles of the vacuum cleaner. In fact, before the invention of the hair dryer, men and women used vacuum cleaners to dry their hair. Goldefroy invented this device to make use of it in his hair salon in France. It was however, neither handheld nor portable; it could only be used by having a person sit underneath it. The handheld hair dryers hit the markets only after 1920. It was the efforts of US Racine Universal Motor Company together with Hamilton Beach Co. which brought about the popularity of handheld hair dryers. Even back then, hair dryers were quite heavy; it would weigh almost about 1 kg and would be quite tough to be used. Many accidents of electrocution too were experienced. It only had the capacity of using 100 watts and thus took a lot of time to dry the hair. Nowadays the average hairdryer uses 2000 watts of power.
