Pearl was walking home from school. On the way, she saw a path that led to a meadow. She walked on until she reached an arched gateway. Beyond the gateway was the most beautiful garden Pearl had ever seen. The sweet smell of the flowers lured her further into the meadow. Bees buzzed, birds chirped and butterflies fluttered by. Pearl walked on until she reached a lake. She looked at her reflection in the lake. Just then, someone from underwater beckoned to her, “Come; play with us. There are many things to see here.” Pearl was staring into the face of a mermaid. She was thrilled! She dived right in. The mermaid said, “Hold my hand,” and swam with Pearl around a little reef garden. Just then, a voice called, “Wake up, Pearl! You’ll be late for school.” Pearl woke up. There was no mermaid or reef garden. She had been dreaming!
