Three Men Embrace Death to Save Many

n 1986, there occurred a serious nuclear accident in Russia. This is known as the Chernobyl disaster. Deadly radioactive material entered into the environment, killing thousands of people. At this time, the three clean-up volunteers, Alexi Ananenko, Valeri Bezpalov and Boris Baranov came forward to stop a nuclear meltdown. In this nuclear reactor, highly dangerous radio-active liquid contaminated a pool of water. The danger of blowing up was approaching every moment. The three men in scuba gear entered into the radioactive water to open a gate valve. They knew they would die but they opened the valve for the contaminated water to drain out. This was a great act of bravery which not everyone can perform. Had the three men not volunteered to enter into the contaminated water there could have been a huge disaster. A thermal explosion could have possibly destroyed the whole Europe completely. The three men died of radiation within days.
