“Ruby, you can buy two things today. But nothing very expensive, mind you!” Ruby’s mother said. “Mom, my doll’s clothes have gone old and dirty. I need new ones and that teddy bear also looks interesting.” Then Ruby saw chocolates on the shelf. They looked so yummy! ‘Mom won’t let me buy them! I’ll just keep some in my pocket. No one will know,’ she thought. Just then, Ruby remembered an incident from the last night. Ruby’s father had read her a story about honesty. Ruby had asked her father, “Dad, if someone does something bad but no one sees him, will he or she be punished for that?” Ruby’s father had said, “Ruby, God watches us all the time! He knows who is bad. That person’s heart also knows he has been bad. Can he live knowing that?” Now, Ruby thought, ‘I will not steal!’ So, Ruby put the chocolate back. Taking the teddy bear and the doll’s clothes, she went looking for the cash counter to pay for both.
