Consistent Focus

A baby named Sidney Poitier was born in Miami, Florida, while his Bahamian parents were on vacation there. Little Sidney returned to Bahamas where he grew up on his father’s tomato farm. When the farm failed, Sidney’s father decided to send him to the United States of America to earn a living. Thus, the teenager started working menial jobs in New York City. Once, Sidney saw an ad for actors in the newspaper. Due to his strong Caribbean accent and poor education, he struggled to read the script. So, the producer threw him out, saying, “Get a real job, like a dishwasher or something!” Sidney thought, ‘How did he know that I was a dishwasher? Do I look like dishwasher material?’ From that moment on, he groomed himself and worked on his craft. Never giving up, Sidney Poitier became one of the greatest actors of all times. He was the first black person to have won an Academy Award in 1963.
