Make a Difference Around You

In 1910, a baby-girl was born in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia. Her parents named her Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. When Agnes was 18 years old, she left home to become a missionary with the Sisters of Loreto. Soon, she travelled to India to teach in a school. She also took her vows as a nun and changed her name to Teresa in memory of St Therese of Lisieux, the patron saint of missionaries. In 1948, Teresa left the convent and started working as a missionary by living with the poor. Everyone called her Mother Teresa and she served the poor in Kolkata. For over 45 years, she contributed to the most destitute people around her, toiling when no one took notice or gave credit. Mother Teresa won the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. At the time of her death, Mother Teresa’s order operated 610 missions in 123 countries. Mother Teresa was able to motivate a large number of people in order to commit them to making life better for the most disadvantaged people in the world.
