Sage Vishwamitra lived in Dandaka forest. He regularly performed prayers, yagyas and yoga with many other sages. But the sages had a great fear of demons who always disturbed them and created great nuisance. Sage Vishwamitra had realised that the demons could not be killed without the Lord’s support. Fed up with the demons, one day sage Vishwamitra went to Ayodhya to meet king Dashrath. He told his problem to the king and asked him to send his brave sons, Rama and Laxman, to fight against the demons and enable the sages to perform their rituals. King Dashrath could not bear the pain of separation from his dear sons. Besides this, he was frightened too at the thought of sending his little sons to fight against the dangerous and cruel demons. But him advised him to quit his excessive affection for his sons and hand over the young sons to sage Vishwamitra. Dashrath agreed to send his sons with the sage Vishwamitra. Rama and Laxman took the blessings of their parents and teacher and left with the sage Vishwamitra for Dandaka forest. Sage Vishwamitra felt honoured that the brothers had even left their family for the sake of his protection.
