It was clear that Doordarshi had a story ready. So, Jewel Plume asked him what it was. Long, long ago there lived two brothers named Sunda and Upasunda who were rakshasas (demons). They wished to gain enough power to rule the three worlds, so they began to worship Lord Shiva. In order to prove that they were worthy, they behaved in a very disciplined way and were very strict in following all the rituals and in performing austerities. Lord Shiva was very pleased with them and appeared before them to grant a boon. But the other gods were worried about what the two would ask and what Lord Shiva would grant them. So, goddess Saraswati intervened so that they might forget their request and say something that was sure to enrage Lord Shiva. “If you are pleased with us, Lord,” said the brothers, “please gift us your consort, goddess Parvati.”
