Indrajeet thundered in on his chariot and Hanuman increased his form to a great height. He broke Indrajeet’s arrows like straw. They battled for long, but Indrajeet could not injure him or capture him. Finally, he decided to use the Brahmastra. He used the weapon to bind Hanuman, but Hanuman had been blessed by all the gods. He remembered that the Brahmastra could bind him only for forty-eight minutes. So, he allowed Indrajeet to tie him up. It took the rakshasas, who were still terrified of him, to find enough rope to bind him. By then, forty-eight minutes were over, and Hanuman knew he was actually free. But he wanted to meet Ravana, so very deceptively he went along to Ravana’s court, allowing the rakshasas to think he was still tied! On the way, the citizens of Lanka mocked him and insulted him. They were unaware that such behaviour would invite Sri Rama’s wrath.
