Once, there was a farmer who owned an old mule. One day, the mule slipped and fell into a dry well while grazing in the fields. The mule started braying loudly. The farmer was at a loss, as to how to pull him out! After sometime, he decided to bury the mule in the well itself. So he called his neighbours to help him in the task. They began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the mule wailed horribly. Then, he remained silent. The farmer looked down into the well, and was surprised by what he saw. Every time when a shovel of dirt landed on the mule’s back, he would shake it off and take a step up on the new layer of dirt! This continued till the mule stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off. The mule was battered, but he refused to accept his fate. The dirt that was intended to bury him, in fact, pushed him into survival.
