The Monastery of St. Paul (the Anchorite) was built in Egypt, in the 5th century AD. The Monastery was built on the site where St. Paul lived for 80 years. The monastery was populated with monks who may have been Melkites, followed by Syrian and Egyptian monks. However, the monastery was raided and destroyed numerous times, the last time in the second half of the 16th century.
Amazing Fact: The monastery lay vacant for almost 119 years, until 1701 AD when it was reconstructed. The present monastery contains 3 different churches.
