The Shard

The Shard is a skyscraper built in London between 2009 and 2012. The Shard, which is often referred to as The Shard of Glass, is a spire-like glass covered pyramidal structure. The angled glass panes covering the structure reflect sunlight and the sky, resulting in the constant change in the appearance of the building with changing seasons and weather conditions. The Shard is covered in enough glass to cover eight football pitches. It’s kept shiny by a team of six abseiling window-cleaners. They tackle one side each week, and after finishing the fourth side they start back at the beginning, so their work is never done.

Amazing Fact: There are 11,000 panes of glass covering a total of 56,000 square metres of surface area on the building.
