The giant oar fish is silvery with dark markings, red fins, a ribbon-like body and long, oar-shaped pelvic fins. It is a solitary fish that swims with its dorsal fin, also swimming in vertical position. It feeds on krill, small crustaceans, small fish and squid. The eggs are 2.5 mm in size and float near the surface until hatching.
