Dairy Technology : A Making Cow
Milk is a balanced food. It is one drinking material, which is considered essential and nutritious in every part of the world. Milk is famous and useful in its various forms and is used abundantly. Various nutritious elements like proteins, fats and minerals are adequately present in Milk. Milk is useful and essential for a person’s physical growth, and that is why there is always a continuous demand of various products made out of it. Owing to the great demand and importance, milk dairy farming is new expanding as an organised industry and one can really look forward to a rewarding career in doing farming. Because of the progress in the field of dairy farming there is a growing demand of capable and trained people in this field.
Dairy technology is one such career in which trained young people have a bright future. Almost in every city, factories of processed milk are established. Looking at the demand and consumption of the milk, there are possibilities of increase in their numbers. In these milk factories besides milk; butter, curd, ghee, ice-creams, cheese, paneer etc., are also been produced. Because of the use of all these products in daily routine they are always in great demand. Dairy technology plays an important role in this because milk and products are scientifically processed.
Today there is an urgent need for trained dairy specialists in various organisations but number of applicants are very less. Thus there are ample opportunities of getting work and moving ahead in this field.

It is necessary to have diploma or degree in Dairy Technology for appointment on technical designations in milk factories. Today many universities of the country are not only giving degree and diploma in this subject but are also providing education till PhD. Those young men and women who want to pursue a career in the field of Dairy Technology should have cleared 10+2 or intermediate with at least 50% marks in science subjects. Diploma course in Dairy Technology is of 2 years. The degree course is for 4 years and the eligibility criteria to get admission in degree is same as that of diploma. However, among various institutions there are variations in time period and percentage of marks.
National Dairy Research Insititute, Karnal offers a diploma course (2 years) and degree course (4 years), where as College of Dairy Science, Udaipur and Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Science and Technology, Pusa offers a course for 5 years. The minimum eligibility for admission is intermediate with 55% marks in science subjects.
Similarly, Seth M.C. College, Habbel (Karnataka) offers a B.Sc course of 4½ years. For admission, it is necessary to be 10+2 with minimum 55% marks in science subjects College of Dairy Technology, Raipur and Faculty of Veterinary Science and Husbandry, Nadia (West Bengal) offers a 4 years degree course. Here also for admission the eligibility is same as mentioned above. Information regarding admission is published in the month of April through major news papers. Applications are accepted till the middle of May, and later on in June-July entrance exams are being organised at all India level. Candidates who have cleared the exams are selected for the course. In the entrance exams three type of question papers are included.
In the first question paper, questions are related to physics, chemistry and maths. In the second question paper, questions are related to english and in third question paper, question are related to general knowledge. Questions regarding physics, chemistry, maths, and english are of the intermediate level.
An option of M.Sc. in Dairy Technology is available for science graduates and business management degree holders. Those candidates who are graduate with microbiology, dairy chemistry, dairy economics, dairy engineering, Bio-technology with at least 55% marks are eligible for admission’s. This is not all. Graduates with business degrees like veterinary science, animal husbandry food technology and home science are also eligible for M.Sc. in Dairy Technology. For graduates with Dairy Technology and science graduates, the duration of this course is 3 years and for graduates with a business degree, duration is 2 years. For achieving the highest position in this field one should be Ph.D in Dairy Technology. which takes around 21½ years to 4 years.
Dairy Technology course includes training in dairy engineering, dairy chemistry, dairy bacteriology, micro-biologic laboratory, statistical quality control etc. This is not all students are also given practical training in factories, milk plant establishments and thorough knowledge of management and accountancy is also been given.
Today Dairy Technology is seen with great possibilities. Many banks have announced loans for the training of young people through various schemes. Therefore, in future, the career will expand a lot. Therefore, in future this field of career will expand a lot.
