In today’s world nobody wants to adopt anything which is against fashion. Fashion because of its increasing popularity has become a complete business of lakhs and crores of rupees. The roots of this business has spread world-wide. For person, choosing a career is a personal decision and one should be considerate while choosing it. No doubt the reason for discontentment in a job is not the work, but our hasty decisions. Fashion Designing is one field where there are so many alternatives available. You can remain in this field and can still do many other things simultaneously. For successful people of this field there are infinite chances for fame, wealth and travelling all over the world.
The four sided affect of consumer culture, magic of the movies, fame, new experiments in the world of fashion, and increasing popularity of the beauty contests have proved to be a boon for this field. In this era of economic liberalization, multinational companies are serious about the growth of fashion business. A large section of foreigners is choosing fashion designing as a career for a golden future, changing recognization in society, changes in day-to-day interests. Various options have been given to younger generation by providing different alternatives and possibilities by the market.

Fashion designers like Reena Dhaka, Ms. India Mehar Casteleno, Ritu Beri, Vendil Rodrique, Ritu Kumar, Rohit Bal, Beena Ramani, Hemant Trivedi etc. have introduced Indian talent and quality of Indian designers to the whole world. With this there is also a growing demand for Indian fashion designers at the international level.
In the field of fashion designing, there is great demand for expert, experienced, and competent people but availability is not adequate. As a result, institutes of personal fields have adopted new techniques and different alternative methods to provide training. In Delhi and other metropolitan cities of the country “NIFT” (National Institute of Fashion Technology) has been set up to impart training.
Experts of the fashion world have claimed that there is no alternative for girls than this career. After 10+2 or intermediate, if any girl does technical course related to fashion there is no possibility for her to remain unemployed.
There is a lot that young girls can do in the fashion field. This field proves to be a boon for those young girls who have an interest in art. According to their ambition, interest and nature they can take training in any field and touch the sky in their career. Main faculties of fashion designing are fashion designer, apparel-merchandising co-ordinator, retailer, sales promotion, fashion photographer, textile designer, accessory-designer, garment manufacturing-technologist, knitwear designer, fashion journalism, apparel-marketing and merchandising, dress manufacturing, leather dresses designer, knitwear industry dress design and development etc. Young girls and boys, who are looking for possibilities in fashion designing as their career should be aware of the fact that if they are taking training from any Government or private institute, they cannot sit at home unemployed. They will definitly get an employment in any of the export companies, fashion brand, textile mills, fashion institutes in public or private sector. In well known institutes, “Campus Interview” is also prevelant. It means when you are doing your finals during training big companies employ eligible trainees with high salaries. In case you are not interested in job, you can even start your own business and become independent.
After taking proper training in fashion designing you can have every information about your favourite field with the help of which you can gain immense experience and can open your own ready made garment boutique. You are able to design dresses for every age group. You can establish your own fashion unit and if you are serious and determined to set your business, you can even get financial aid from nationalised banks. After women, there are changes in dressing up of men and organising men’s beauty contest have suggested new options to fashion designers. Many companies which need eligible and experienced people, have started organizing fashion shows.
In the year 1990, Central Cloth Ministry established National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in the capital of the country. This is country’s celebrity institution. Most of the genius dress designers are gifts of this institution. There is an excellent arrangement of training in this institution which is famous in the whole of Asia.
Here, they basically provide 5 types of technical courses. To get admission in fashion designing course, it is desirable that one should have cleared class XII exams. Duration of this course is three years. From this very institute “Apparel Merchandising and Marketing (AMM) course” can also be studied. To get admission in this two years duration course one should be a successful graduate from any faculty. “Garment Manufacturing and Technology (GMT) Course” is also for two years and for admission one should be graduate from any faculty. “Accessory Designing” can be done after 10+2. This course is also for two years duration. Similarly, candidates who are intermediate are eligible for admission in “Textile Designing Course”. For admission in above mentioned courses every year entrance examination is conducted at all India level. Medium of this examination is English.
For enrollment in “NIFT” forms are available from November, while entrance exams are held in January-February. In the written examination questions on reasoning, sketching, imaginative power, originality, knowledge about colours and general knowledge are generally asked. Duration of the written examination is almost half an hour. During interview they check candidate’s interest and commitment towards their career and about their future plans. 30 students are selected in all.
In AMS, there are courses in buying, marketing, fashion co-ordination, advertising and public relation. For training, opportunities are given in show-rooms, export houses and trade fair etc. In GMT course, training is given in production management. In written examination of AMS and GMT, negative marking is done. In this questions based on
Xth class mathematics are asked. In both AMT and GMT courses 100 candidates are called and in the end 30 candidates are selected, for each course.
