Rajendra was married with Rajvanshi Devi at the young age of thirteen. At that time he was a student of 5th class. Before that his grand parents had died. His father-in-law was an attorney in Aara.
His father’s financial position was not good at the time of his marriage.
His wife Smt. Rajvanshi Devi was an ideal Hindu woman. She had taken all the responsibilities of his family and getting him rid of all the worries. She never put any demand. She never done anything against her husband’s wish.
Being the first lady of India she was prideless. She lived in President House in a simple manner as Babuji lived—always humble and affectionate. Even being the wife of President she wore white sari of Khadi and spoke her village dialect.
Higher education
Rajendra did not discontinue his study after marriage. After completing the study in Chapra he came to Calcutta where he topped the entrance test. He obtained scholarship of twenty rupees for achieving top rank and ten rupees for scoring maximum marks in English. He was the first student from Bihar who stood first in this examination.
Later on Rajendra topped every exam which he appeared.
In the meantime he took the membership of ‘Don Society’, which was established by Satish Chandra Mukherjee.
There was a federation of Bihari students in Calcutta named ‘Bihar Club’. The members of this association used to meet each other on Sunday for discussions. Rajendra Babu also participated in the activities of students union. Once he was elected secretary of college union.
At the same time his attention diverted towards politics. Whenever speeches of Congress leaders, published in newspapers, he read them attentively. If in Calcutta any meeting was held Rajendra attend it.
He was totally against the conservative thought of mind.
But by busying himself in other activities he could not attend his studies properly. But he made good use of his vacations to fulfill the backlog. Instead going back to home he worked hard on his studies and stood first in B.A. in the entire university. He obtained two scholarships. After graduation he got admission in M.A. and B.L. as well.
As already stated that he was the member of Bihar Club, now he started participating in it regularly. Yet there was no branch of Congress in Bihar. He wanted to form an organisation of students. Mahesh Narain, the editor of ‘Bihar Times’ lend his support to him. By the efforts of Rajendra this organisation came to existence in 1906. Its first session was held in Patna College, and its constitution was also framed.
Barrister Sarfuddin presided over this session. In the beginning it was not a political organisation, but later on high dignitaries joined it. Among them were—Babu Brij Kishore, Deep Narain Singh, Sachchidanand Sinha, Doctor Ganesh Prasad, Sh. Parmeshwar Lal, Annie Besant, Dinbandhu Andrews, Sarojini Naidu and Mahatma Gandhi. These dignitaries presided over this organisation later on. Several respected leaders of Bihar were its members.
