(Writing Paragraphs and Compositions)

Paragraph : A paragraph is a part of a chapter, composition, essay, article or a story. It may consist of a line or several lines dealing with a single point or particular aspect. Several paragraphs make up a composition, or an article or a story. Let us suppose, an article, a chapter or book or an essay is a car, then a paragraph is just one of its components, say ‘Gear box.’ It will deal with gears only and leave the other parts for other paragraphs to describe.
It is construction of a single thought, idea or aspect. There must be unity of thoughts and expressions dealing with single aspect. All the sentences must relate to that aspect or idea. A good paragraph can be a compact composition or a note. The subject should not be changed abruptly. A new idea or situation must be dealt in a separate paragraph.
Remember
1. The group of sentences of a paragraph should be interrelated in leading on the topic in proper sequence and meaningful way. No sentence must deviate from the subject.
2. The length of the paragraph depends upon the topic’s requirement and consistency of expressions.
3. The sentences must be in logical sequence, orderly and each must carry the thought flawlessly into the next sentence.
Useful Tips
● Maintain the order of the cause and effect. The starting sentence of the paragraph must express the fact, statement or a proportion of the topic. The last sentence should conclude the topic as well as the paragraph naturally.
● The sequences of time and space should be kept in mind in writings of descriptive, narrative and technical nature. But in an explanatory paragraph illustrations can be used along with the text.
● The starter sentence must convey the central idea of the paragraph coherently.
● Construct the sentences in different sizes and compositions. Don’t repeat the same word or expression again and again. Give every sentence a meaningful role to carry forward the thought. Avoid monotony.
● A sentence and the following one should have some link words to have a smooth flow of the topic down the line of sentences. It specially helps in maintaining relationship with persons.
● Use ‘as we all know’, ‘as a matter of fact’, ‘as the accepted fact’, ‘as is commonly known’, and ‘needless to say’ to reinforce the important point of the paragraph. No harm in being assertive. It will show your academic confidence.
● Use synonyms where repetition of a word or an expression is unavoidable to add colour without being monotonous. Show resourcefulness of your vocabulary. For the sake of grammar you have learnt a lot of antonyms and synonyms. Make use of them.
