22. IRRIGATION PROJECTS OF INDIA

Water is most important for humans as well as for the agriculture and the country’s development. Optimum use of water resources, therefore, is of great importance.
Water Resources Potential : The run-off of water in the rivers of the country has been assessd as 1869 km. Of this, the usable portion is estimated as about 690 km.
Major and Medium Irrigation Projects : Irrigation Projects are classified as medium and major projects. The Culturable Command Area (CCA) between 2,000 and 10,000 hectares are classified as medium projects and those with a CCA of more than 10,000 hectares as major projects. At the end of the Eighth Plan, there are 162 major, 240 medium and 74 extension projects continuing from the previous plans spilling over to the Ninth Plan with a total spill-over cost of Rs. 79,317 crore.
Bargi Project (Madhya Pradesh) : It is a project consisting of a masonry dam across Bargi river in the Jabalpur district and a left bank canal.
Beas (Joint venture of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan) : This is our biggest multipurpose river valley project having a dam across the Sutlej at Bhakra, the Nangal hydel channel, two power houses at Bhakra Dam and two power stations at Ganguwal and Kotla.
Bhima (Maharashtra) : It has two dams, one on the Pawana river near Phagne in Pune district and the other across the Krishna river near Ujjain in Sholapur district.
Chambal (Joint Project of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan) : This project comprises three dams namely—Gandhi Sagar Dam, Rana Pratap Sagar Dam and Jawahar Sagar Dam.
Damodar Valley Project (West Bengal and Bihar) : This project meets the requirement of irrigation, flood control and power generation in West Bengal and Bihar. It comprises multipurpose dams at Konar, Tilaiya, Maithon and Panchet; barrage at Durgapur; and thermal power houses at Bokaro, Chandrapura and Durgapur. It is started by the Damodar Valley Corporation.
Farakka (West Bengal) : This project was started for maintenance of Kolkata port and for improving the navigability of the Hooghly. It comprises a barrage across the Ganga at Farakka, a barrage at Jangipur across the Bhagirathi and feeder channel taking off from the Ganga at Farakka and tailing into the Bhagirathi below the Jangipur barrage.
Gandak (Joint project of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) : This project provides the irrigation and power benefits to these states as well as to Nepal.
Ghataprabha (Karnataka) : This project meets the requirement of Ghataprabha in Belgaum and Bijapur districts.
Hasdeo Bango Project (Madhya Pradesh) : It is the third phase of Hasdeo Bango project complex. It envisages construction of a masonry dam across Hasdeo river. First two phases are complete.
Hirakud (Orissa) : This is the world’s longest dam constructed on the Mahanadi river.
Jayakwadi (Maharashtra) : It is masonry spillway across the river Godavari.
Kakrapara (Gujarat) This dam is on the Tapti river near Kakrapar in Surat district.
Kosi (Bihar) : A multipurpose project, meant to serves Bihar and Nepal.
Krishna Project (Maharashtra) : Dho dam near Dhom village on Krishna and Kabhar dam near Kanhar village on Varna river in Satna district.
Kukadi Project (Maharashtra) : It has five independent storage dams, i.e., Yodgaon, Manikdohi, Dimbha, Wadaj and Pimpalgaon Jog. The canal system comprises (i) Kukadi left bank canal (ii) Simbha left bank canal (iii) Dimbha right bank canal (iv) Meena feeder and (v) Meena branch.
Left bank Ghagra Canal (Uttar Pradesh) : This project provides a link channel from the left bank of Ghagra river of Girja barrage and joining with Saryu river. Also a barrage across Saryu.
Madhya Ganga Canal (Uttar Pradesh) : This provides a barage across Ganaga in Bijnor district.
Mahanadi Delta Scheme (Orissa) : In this project the irrigation scheme will utilise releases from the Hirakud reservoir.
Mahanadi Reservoir Project (Madhya Pradesh) : This project has three phases : 1. Ravishankar Sagar Project and feeder canal system for supply of water of Bhilai Steel Plant and Sandur dam across Sandur village. 2. Extension of Mahanadi feeder canal. 3. Pairi dam.
Mahi (Gujarat) : This project has two phases—one across the Mahi river near Wanakbori village and the other across Mahi river near Kadana.
Malaprabha (Karnataka) : In this project, a dam across the Malaprabha in Belgaum district has been made.
Mayurakshi (West Bengal) : This project is an irrigation and hydro-electric project and comprises the Canada dam.
Nagarjunasagar (Andhra Pradesh) : This dam is on the Krishna river near Nandikona village (about 44 km from Hyderabad).
Panam (Gujarat) : In this project a dam across Panam river near Keldezar village in Panchmahals district is constructed.
Parambikulam Aliyar (Joint venture of Tamil Nadu and Kerala) : The project envisages the integrated harnessing of eight rivers, six in the Annamalai Hills and two in the plains.
Pochampad (Andhra Pradesh) : Across Godavari river.
Rajasthan Canal (now called Indira Gandhi Canal) (Rajasthan) : This is a 650 km long canal which makes use of water released from Pong dam and will provide irrigation facilities to the north-western region of Rajasthan, i.e., a part of the Thar desert, it has the Rajasthan feeder canal (with the first 167 km in Punjab and Haryana and the remaining 37 km in Rajasthan) and 445 km in Rajasthan main canal entirely in Rajasthan.
Ramganga (Uttar Pradesh) : In this project dam across Ramganga, Garhwal district is made. The project has, besides reducing the intensity of floods in central and western Uttar Pradesh, provides water for the Delhi water supply scheme.
Sabarmati (Gujarat) : This project has a storage dam across Sabarmati river near Dhari village in Mehsana district and Wasna barrage near Ahmedabad.
Sarda Sahayak (Uttar Pradesh) : In this project the construction of a barrage across the river Ghagra, a link channel, a barrage across river Sarda and a feeder channel involving construction of two major aqueducts over river Gomti and Sai is involved.
Sone High lever canal (Bihar) : This is the extension on Sone barrage project.
Tawa (Madhya Pradeh) : This project is across the Tawa river, in Hoshangabad district.
Tehri Dam (Uttaranchal) : This is a dam project with earth and rock-fill dam on Bhagirathi river in Tehri District.
Thein Dam (Punjab) : The project involves the constrution of a dam across river Ravi and a power plant on its left bank.
Tungabhadra (Joint Project of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka) : This is a dam on the Tungabhadra river.
Ukai (Gujarat) : This is a dam project across Tapti river near Ukai village.
Upper Krishna (Karnataka) : It has a construction of Narayanpur dam across the Krishna river and a dam at Almatti.
Upper Penganga (Maharashtra) : This involves the construction of two reservoirs on Penganga river at Isapur in Yavatmal district and the other on Rayadhu river at Sapli in Parbhani district.
